Clothing Suggestions for Your Upcoming MTB Outing

  • Sturdy Biking/Hiking/Athletic Shoes: Flat, grippy rubber, and rigid outsole shoes are preferred for optimum pedaling efficiency. Most of our guides wear flats while riding in Sedona due to the terrains unique features and technical characteristics. Our favorite brands of MTB shoes are Five Ten, Giro, and Ride Concepts.

  • Coolmax Socks/Wool: Fitted Coolmax socks will allow you the best performance while pedaling in warmer temperatures during the Spring, Summer, and Fall. We advise checking out Swiftwick and Features for the best fit with Coolmax materials. Our recommended brands for thin wool socks include Point6, Feetures, Thorlo, Smartwool, and Darn Tough. While travelling we would advise against cotton socks, trust us on this one!! Wool socks will allow you to wear them for multiple days of hiking/biking and prevent blisters better than any other material available. Coolmax will give you the most secure and dialed in fit and can keep your toes cool in the summer heat.

  • Helmet: If you will be bringing your own bike, be sure to bring your helmet! All of our clients must have a helmet to ride with our guides to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience across the land of red rock. If you will be renting a bike during your experience with us, then there will be one included in your MTB rental.

  • MTB Pads: We always advise knee pads for riding in Sedona and especially on technical and black diamond rides. They're not required, but there's no worst feeling if/when you crash -- to realize you could have easily prevented an injury by padding up.  If you're brand new to MTB and you've already invested in a new bike, we would highly recommend elbow & knee pads too while you're learning. This will keep you on the trails and as safe as possible against unexpected accidents. Our guides will have FOX D30 Knee Pads & Elbow Pads available in Youth (One Size Fits All) and Adult Sizes (Sizes Available: Small, Medium, Large). These are included at no additional fee for each member of your party.

  • MTB Gloves: Every rider should always wear gloves while riding their MTB. They don't have to be expensive, fancy, or even matching... They just need to ensure your hands don't slip off the handlebars while riding due to sweat, fatigue, and other unforeseen factors. Even better, they can protect your hands against preventable abrasions from tree branches, thorny bushes, cacti, and the dirt --  if you take a "dirt bath" in the red rock sands & slick rock. If you don't have gloves, we will have some basic traction boosting protective gloves for you to borrow during your tour with us at no additional charge.

  • Rain Shell: Rain shell, waterproof/breathable jacket if there is a 20% change of rain (or more) during your visit. Our guides will have emergency rain ponchos in the event of unforeseen precipitation. Our guides will always have disposable rain ponchos to provide for your group if precipitation is in the forecast at no additional charge.

  • Breathable  Shirts & UPF Hoodies: UPF protective shirts are highly recommend to protect against the sun. We recommend lighter colors as they draw less heat from the sun. The best materials are wool blends (during Winter) and Coolmax for breathability during Fall, Spring, and Summer. Our favorite type of all season hiking & MTB shirts are UPF hoodies. These allow you to protect your face, neck, and arms from the sun while also keeping you cool and comfortable on the trails. This is our favorite piece of adventure clothing and can make a huge difference during the warmer months in Sedona. Our guides will always have UPF hoodies available for you to borrow for free on any of our group members in a plethora of colors for your choosing at no additional charge.

  • Pants/Shorts: You can pretty much wear shorts while mountain biking during all months of the year in Sedona. However, if you're sensitive to the cold, you might want to pack some leggings/thermal tights too during December and January.  If you will also be hiking, or visiting Grand Canyon, the we would suggest bringing breathable pants for your adventures during late November, December, January, and early February.   We recommend Kuhl, Prana, DUER, or Columbia as the best brands for versatile biking and hiking transferability. If you're seeking MTB specific pants or shorts, we advise checking out Fox Racing, Pearl Izuma, Troy Lee Designs, and Ride Concepts. Best of all, many of those brands will come with built-in chamois shorts.

  • Chamois Shorts: If there's one piece of gear that will enhance your riding comfort in Sedona (and abroad) more than anything -- it's these life savers!! Or should we say, "undercarriage" savers :) If you're doing multiple riding days, longer rides, and more technical terrain you should greatly consider picking up at least one pair of chamois shorts. They will soften the blow of the seat against your underbits, and prevent you from walking like Ole' Tex when you get off the saddle from your crusher ride. We advise checking out Fox Racing, Pearl Izuma, Troy Lee Designs, and Ride Concepts for the best options. However, if you're on a budget you can locate a ton of very affordable options from other vendors too online. Just remember,  any padding at all is better than no padding, when it comes to taking blows where the sun doesn't shine.

  • NO SANDALS/FLIP FLOPS: Absolutely no flip-flops or sport sandals allowed on any outings as your primary hiking/ biking shoes. For creekside hikes/rides, please feel free to bring water shoes or sport sandals as a secondary pair of shoes for creek crossings and swimming.

  • Sunscreen: We advise wearing at least 30+SPF Sport Sunscreen at all times of the year while hiking in Sedona. Our guides will always carry 30SPF sunscreen with insect repellant if you need some.

  • Thin Fleece Jacket/Light Puffy Jacket: If you're attending a Sedona Night Ride or starting your ride before sunrise, we would highly recommend bringing either a long-sleeve poly/Coolmax layer, thin fleece, or light puffy jacket to keep you comfortable. Our guides will always have extra layers if needed to ensure your comfort.

Additional Clothing for Outings in December - February

  • Gloves/Beanie: Coolmax beanie and light coolmax gloves.  Our guides will always have extra beanies, gloves, and neck gaiters for you to borrow at no additional charge during Fall, Winter, and Spring.

  • Layering: Long underwear, one pair of wicking tops and bottoms that are lightweight to mid-weight. Recommended wicking materials include capilene, wool, Coolmax, or polyester.

  • Jackets: Additional fleece jacket or insulated coat; warm, lightweight and packable. Down jackets or synthetic fill puffy jackets are ideal for layering & being comfortable, while remaining active.

  • Insulated Pants: Insulated pants during January/February if you're VERY sensitive to colder temperatures or snow conditions are present. However, please be aware this level of layering can be restrictive to your pedaling abilities and could drastically reduce your abilities on your MTB. Alternatively, wearing leggings under your thin & flexible pants/shorts will ensure you're comfortable in colder conditions. Generally your body will run warmer than expected while pedaling your bike.

  • Shell: Waterproof/breathable rain jacket or shell. This can help seal the warmth of your other layering pieces and should be packed if precipitation is in the forecast, snow is present in the Winter, or temperatures are below 45 degrees. Our guides will always have disposable rain ponchos for you if there is a chance of precipitation in the forecast at no additional cost.
