If you’re seeking a broad mix of all Sedona’s red rock terrain features, then this ride is perfect for you! You will get a fine concoction of berms, drops, rollers, tree passages, baby heads, root blocks, slickrock, narrow ledges, and open trail to use your big gears. You will begin with a relaxed introduction on Lizardhead Trail, before connecting with the evolving terrain features of Chuckwagon Trail. This section of the ride will throw you all the technical challenges you’re seeking with adventurous climbs across slickrock drainages, loose corners on downhills to keep you focused, and endless big-time views of Secret Mountain Wilderness -- to leave you breathless in more ways than one.
After sweating your way around The Wagon, you will reach the steady uphill climb of Long Canyon Trail. This section is easy and provides a good reprieve from the intermittent sufferfest you’ve just survived on the last section of your ride. Right around when you’re getting comfy, the trail will shift into Deadman’s Pass as it begins to ride the edge of the wilderness boundary and provides opportunities to see javelina, mule deer, coyote, bear, coati, and more!
After steadily reaching your minor summit on Deadman’s Pass, the trail starts a spectacular technical downhill section with heaps of armored features and heavy drops to allow you to choose your own path of adventure based upon your abilities and comfort. After thrilling and willing your way down the unique terrain of this section, the next part of the trail brings you into the climax of your adventure. Mescal Trail starts off ominously with some lightly technical switchbacks and rock step passages, before reaching one of the largest deposits of slickrock in Sedona. The cascading tiers of Mescal Mountain offer a plethora of rideable lines and even allows the rider choose their future, as the trail splits for “Extreme” vs “Difficult” two times across the immense red rock outcropping.
The feelings while riding through this section make it seem like you’re riding the barrel of colossal wave of overhanging slickrock and your laughs will deeply echo through the sacred center of the formation for miles abound. Once the technical riding has concluded, the next section of the trail will be a flowy and showy classic as it exposes you to colorful views of Wilson Mountain, Lost Wilson Mountain, Maroon Mountain, East Pocket, Capitol Butte, and Lost Canyon. The conclusion of your adventure will retrace the first moments of Chuckwagon Trail to reconnect with Lizard Head to form one of the best upper-moderate wholesomely technical cross country rides in all of Red Rock Country.
