If you’re seeking big-time views and a more aggressive pace, this ride is right up your alley!! This adventure will conquer summits, slingshot across quicksand, slalom through cypress overgrowth, and ride the most epic red rock barrels and berms of Sedona. The trail will begin with a mellow warm-up on Lizardhead Trail to then reach a hearty climb of the technical Chuckwagon Trail and eventually reach the hidden local gem known as Anaconda Trail.
This trail starts with suffering and ends with smiles as it switchbacks to the mini sky island summit before delivering superb downhill pleasure along its chundery red plated descent into Dry Creek and Cypress Trail. From there, the trail ascends the flowy uphill Dawa Trail, where the rider is exposed to impressive views of Doe Mountain and an array of chunky red rock features to increase the heart rate and create a physically challenging ride. The trail then connects abruptly to Cockscomb Trail, where riders receive free tummy tickles from the terrains escalating steep up-and-down hills, which allow for good flow and increasingly higher speeds with every push back up to the top en route to Lookout Spire.
Once reaching Aerie Trail, the adventure leads to some of the best berm riding in Sedona, with high speeds and spunky cutty corners, to create a playful riding experience around every bend. The ride then transitions into Deadman’s Pass Trail, where a rocky uphill section challenges the riders commitment and offers armored passages to ascend with exertion to the next stage of your experience. From here, one can observe the sacred Kachina Woman Spire, which decorates the landscape as one of the most impressive hoodoo formations in Sedona. From this area, one can also view a cascade of some of Sedona’s most uniquely shaped spire formations, including: Grandfather Spire, Lookout Tower, Ursa Minor, and Ursa Major in the background.
The switchbacked pay-to-play start up Mescal Mountain Trail begins with pain, but leads to some of the most playful and fun riding in Sedona at a moderate grade. The path will separate in two sections to allow riders to choose their own adventure, between “Extreme” vs “Difficult” to deliver an optimum slick rock riding adventure for everyone -- as the trail surfs every inch of the gargantuanly cascaded Mescal Mountain. This formation represents one of the largest red rock features in Sedona and seems like an incomprehensible ride, until the pedaling is initiated and you’ve thoughtfully committed to your lines.
The ending of your ride is smooth and flowy for some glorious views of Maroon Mountain, East Pocket, Lost Wilson Mountain, Wilson Mountain, Lost Canyon, Dry Creek Spires Area, and Capitol Butte. The final leg of the trail will pound through a series of dry slick rock washes for a mixture of avoiding unique trail obstacles like: hidden baby heads, sneaky shark fins, root boulders, and many more. While sometimes this section feels like operating a jackhammer, it’s mostly feels galvanizing in all the right ways and is considered exceptional for even the harshest critic. This unique loop delivers an amazing display of elevated views, unique spires, and enjoyable riding throughout for its moderate level of difficulty.
